Abstract:
This data product maps the location of hardbottom habitats within the seafloor environments of the South Atlantic Bight inside a 1 x 1 minute grid. Hard bottom habitat refers to live corals/coral reefs, underwater rocky vertical outcrops, exposed flat pavements colonized by marine invertebrates, shallow drowned slopes supporting macroalgae and hard bottom/gravel mixed substrates. These habitats are associated with diverse marine communities are considered Essential Fish Habitat (EFH) for a wide variety of species that are commercially and recreationally important throughout the South Atlantic Bight. The total area of hardbottoms mapped in this dataset is limited to the areas where studies have occurred; therefore this is not a complete representation of regional hardbottom resources.
The Nature Conservancy’s objective for this project is to create an updated version of the 1 x 1 minute grid that was originally developed during the Southeast Area Monitoring and Assessment Program’s (SEAMAP) Bottom Mapping Project from 2001. TNC used the protocols previously defined by SEAMAP to classify data records as: Hardbottom [HB] (clear evidence of hardbottom habitat), Potential hardbottom [PH] (possible evidence of hardbottom habitat) or Not hardbottom [NH] (no evidence of hardbottom habitat being present). Data records incorporated into this database include all data records from the SEAMAP Bottom Mapping Project except those that include information from trawls and dredges due to a more conservative methodology used to assess hardbottom occurrences as well as several other data records that have been updated with more current information for those specified spatial locations. The database also added new datasets available since the publishing of the original SEAMAP hardbottom dataset. The source citation list later in this document provides additional information about how each dataset was incorporated. Information is summarized at the 1x1 minute grid scale which classifies each polygon that contains a survey record as either “Hardbottom” – cells that have one or more occurrence of HB, “Potential hardbottom” – cells that do not have a HB occurrence but have one or more PH occurrence or “Surveys with no identification of hardbottom” – cells that do not have any HB or PH occurrences but have one or more NH occurrence within that 1x1 minute gridded area.

The primary focus of this effort was to identify the location and extent of benthic hardbottoms, since these areas represent essential fish habitat (EFH) for a wide variety of species that are commercially and recreationally harvested in the South Atlantic region. The NOAA/USGS cold water coral geographic database [CoWCoG] was established by USGS in 2008 and is currently maintained by NOAA Coral Reef Conservation Program (CRCP) – Deep Sea Coral Research and Technology Program (DSCRTP). CoWCoG is used to identify deep sea coral ecosystems (DSCE) throughout US waters. The database makes information about the locations and taxonomy of cold-water corals available to the public in an easy-to-access form while preserving the scientific integrity of the data. This GIS data set represents coral and hardbottom habitats off Broward County Florida. These data are the results of an integrated mapping project undertaken to provide a habitat map of the shallow Broward County seafloor between the 0m and 35m contour. All data were mapped in ArcGIS9 and polygons were drawn at a scale of 1:6000 with a one acre minimum mapping unit. The entire area mapped was roughly 110 square-kilometers. This dataset overlaps with several other remotely sensed habitat products out of which the source data used to attribute the SAB Benthic Habitat 1 x 1 minute grid included the area of coverage for each of the most recently developed dataset at that specified spatial location. All data in this dataset was classified as either Hardbottom (HB) – [aggregated patch reef, colonized pavement, linear reef, patch reef, ridge & spur and groove] or Not hardbottom (NH) – [sand, sand borrow area & scattered coral/rock in sand].

This GIS data set serves as a documentation of the benthic habitat found in Florida Bay as it existed in the spring of 2004. Digital data was collected using photogrammetric techniques. Groundtruthing was performed to verify photointerpretation classification. This dataset was created to provide an accurate depiction of the benthic habitat of Florida Bay, as defined using "Habitat Classification Categories for Florida Bay”. This dataset overlaps with several other remotely sensed habitat products out of which the source data used to attribute the SAB Benthic Habitat 1 x 1 minute grid included the area of coverage for each of the most recently developed dataset at that spatial location. The benthic habitat mapping efforts employed a combined-technique approach incorporating laser bathymetry, aerial photography, acoustic ground discrimination (AGD), video groundtruthing, limited subbottom profiling, and expert knowledge (Walker et al., 2008). The maps were produced by outlining the features in the high resolution bathymetric data and classifying the features based on their geomorphology and benthic fauna. In situ data, video camera groundtruthing, and acoustic ground discrimination were used to help substantiate the classification of the habitats using aerial photography and geomorphology. This dataset overlaps with several other remotely sensed habitat products out of which the source data used to attribute the SAB Benthic Habitat 1 x 1 minute grid included the area of coverage for each of the most recently developed dataset at that spatial location. This data set includes benthic data for Florida Bay, Biscayne Bay and the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary interpreted from 1:48,000-scale natural color aerial photography and delineated by ecologists and FWC/FMRI staff. Each of the three regions had their data digitized in different manners. FKNMS used NOAA photogrammetry and stereo analytical plotters. The plotter data were then converted into ARC/INFO. Biscayne Bay aerial photos were digitized by Greenhorne and O'Mara using stereo analytical plotters. Florida Bay data was digitized by NOAA-CSC in Charleston, SC by scanning the photos and the linework overlays. The classification system was the same for all three regions. A hard copy atlas and CD-ROM titled "Florida Marine Research Institute Technical Reports: Benthic Habitats of the Florida Keys", were created by the FWC/FMRI and NOAA. This dataset overlaps with several other remotely sensed habitat products out of which the source data used to attribute the SAB Benthic Habitat 1 x 1 minute grid included the area of coverage for each of the most recently developed dataset at that spatial location. All data in this dataset was classified as either Hardbottom (HB) – [hardbottom, hardbottom with seagrass, patch reef & platform margin reef] or Not hardbottom (NH) – [bare substrate, continuous seagrass & patchy (discontinuous) seagrass].

The first draft of this feature class was created in 2008 by the contractor Avineon, Inc. This feature class was improved in 2010 by incorporating new high-resolution side scan sonar data and 2054 field data points. In 1982, the Gulf and South Atlantic Fisheries Development Foundation, the Georgia Sea Grant College Program, and five shrimp bottom captains initiated a cooperative venture fishing program to determine how shrimp trawlers could be used for fishing for offshore finfish. The Experimental Oculina Research Reserve (EORR) encompasses numerous high-relief rocky pinnacles where Oculina varicosa, a fragile deep-water coral, grows. The project’s goal was to provide reconnaissance geologic maps of the Experimental Oculina Research Reserve and an unprotected control area north of the reserve to support NOAA NMFS studies of grouper spawning aggregations. To accomplish this, the project collected sidescan sonar data and sediment samples throughout both study areas and used video and observations from a manned submersible at selected sites. This data layer was built from coordinates defined by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Region 4 and developed into GIS data by NOAA Coastal Services Center. Coordinates are published in the Coastal Programs and Surface Water Quality Grants Section, Ocean Dumping Program. This data was used to delineate “Not hardbottom” (NH) areas and to remove data that portray previous benthic environments before dredge material was disposed of at these locations.

This is the base data used to create the sediment grain size interpolated grid for the South Atlantic Bight Marine Assessment near shore (up to 200 meter depth) area. The interpolation was done using grab and core sample data from original data sources. These include USGS usSEABED Extracted and Parsed data for the Atlantic Coast, USGS usSEABED Extracted and Parsed data for the Gulf of Mexico, Carteret County North Carolina Sand Search cores, and South Carolina Dept. of Natural Resources Ocean Sediment point data. All data points in this dataset were classified as Not hardbottom [NH].

This mainly consisted of locations where higher resolution remotely sensed benthic habitat data and/or current & historic Ocean Dredge Material Disposal Sites (ODMDS) [polygons] occurred that overlapped grab, core, trap, sidescan and/or subbottom profiling data [points and lines].

Applied methodology used in original SEAMAP Bottom Habitat Mapping Project to classify non-SEAMAP data records as either: Hardbottom (HB), Potential Hardbottom or Not Hardbottom (NH). We also removed any data that was unable to be directly input into any of these three classification types.

With the data in the 1 x 1 minute gridded format, we combined all 3 like gridded data types (HB, PH, NH) into one 1 x 1 minute gridded spatial dataset for a total of 3 1x1 minute grids; removing overlap that may occur in the merging process.
