Description:
Abstract:
a. This dataset is based on the summaries of observed nesting activities along the Georgia coastline between 2010 and 2012. Nest counts were done at 18 locations, for 7 species, including brown pelican, laughing gull, royal tern, sandwich tern, least tern, gull-billed tern, and black skimmer. Colonies are visited several times (at least) throughout the nesting season to estimate a maximum number of nests, as well as determine whether the colony was productive or failed. These visits start as soon as a colony is active – usually late April to early May primary initiation, and continue until colony fails or fledging young. Data is collected in various methods (ground and aerial), depending on species and site accessibility. b. This data is derived from a number of partners on the Georgia Coast, all members of the Georgia Shorebird Alliance, as well as graduate students working on certain species. Partners include staff from Little St Simons Island, St Catherines Island, Little Cumberland Island, Cumberland Island National Park, and US Fish and Wildlife Service. The Nongame Conservation Section of Georgia DNR coordinates these efforts and maintains a single database
Purpose:
a. This GIS data set was created for the purpose of describing the location and species of seabird nesting along the Georgia coastline so that these nesting activities can be considered for any planned energy development or other coastal use activities.

b. Data processing: The nests were summed by species over a maximum of three years by species. An average and a coefficient of variance were computed. The following locations and species had less than three years: Little Tybee, Least Tern, 2 years; Burnt Pot Island, all species, 1 year; Wilmington Island Publix, Least Tern, 2 years; Little Egg Island Bar, Laughing Gull, 2 years; Cumberland Island, Least Tern, 2 years; Kingsland Publix, Least Tern, 2 years; Kings Bay Hanger, all species, 2 years, Pompey Island Rake, all species, 2 years, Wolf Island NWR, all species, 2 years, Little Cumberland Island, all species, 2 years; Bock's Board Packaging, all species, 1 year.

Process_Description:
Seabird colony data are collected in several ways depending on the species and location. An attempt is made to survey each colony every 2 weeks, though there is variability in colony visitation. For example, during the 2011-2012 period a graduate student was working with Least Tern and so those colonies were visited several times a week. Most counts were done from the ground at the edge of a colony so birds were not disturbed, though the Least Tern colonies were counted with walk through surveys finding and marking every nest. The Brunswick Dredge Island colony was surveyed by aerial surveys where nests were counted from photographs, as well as a single walk through nest count during the peak of nesting season. Our aerial photographs are detailed enough to separate tern species such as Royal Tern and Sandwich Tern. Little Egg Island Bar Brown Pelican colony is typically counted from aerial photographs. The type of count is recorded in the Seabird Database.
